German states call for ban on household pesticide (Glyphosate)

After reevaluating the most widely used pesticide in Germany and worldwide, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) cancer researchers have categorised Glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans”.

In a resolution on Friday (8 May), Germany’s state ministers called for “the supply to and use by private persons to be banned for precautionary reasons”. In addition, the politicians argue that Glyphosate should be prohibited for uses close to consumers.

5 ways to tackle the mess that bees are in

The news about bees’ woes has been circulating for so long that you may have tuned it out. But we’ve also known about bee problems long enough that scientists are beginning to offer up solutions.

There seem to be several things teaming up on bees and other pollinators; one of them is a parasitic mite called the Varroa destructor. Varroa mites may have something to do with colony collapse, though that’s still a mystery. Journalist Charles C. Mann takes National Geographic readers on a tour of the ideas to make the Varroa mite less of a destructor in this article. The following five solutions are drawn from his piece.

Solution 1 — Miticide

This is the main way beekeepers deal with Varroa right now. It’s not ideal:

Most farmers facing insect issues turn to chemicals, such as the pesticides sprayed on apple trees to control maggots. Even…

Of all the peculiarities about human nature, one of the most interesting in my opinion is that we?re so resistant to change.

Humans simply don?t deal with it well. We tend to root. We find comfort in familiarity.

And, even when the familiar becomes unpleasant, we still put up with it. We prefer to suffer through something that we know rather than change things and risk the unknown.

This is why people stay in bad relationships. Or why they continue working for bosses they dislike at jobs they despise. It?s the fear of change.

But everyone? absolutely everyone? has a breaking point. It?s a point where the status quo becomes so uncomfortable, so painful, that we snap. And walk away.

It?s the same in finance. People stick with what they know, even if they have to endure a little pain and…

2 cool maps that show how wind power is poised to go big — really big

Wind turbines have only a tenuous link to most Americans’ daily lives because wind farms generate less than 5 percent of all of the electricity produced today.

As reducing greenhouse gas emissions to slow climate change becomes more urgent, though, wind is expected to become one of the country’s largest sources of energy by midcentury. The U.S. Department of Energy has published two new maps that put that future in more concrete terms.

Projected growth of the wind industry over the next 35 years.Projected growth of the wind industry over the next 35 years.Department of Energy

The first is part of a report released this spring showing how wind power could grow enough to generate 35 percent of U.S. electricity by 2050 — up from 10 percent in 2020 and 20 percent in 2030.

The map, called “Wind Vision,” shows how much wind power generating capacity each state had in 2000, 2010, and 2013, and Department of Energy…

Authorities targeting Americans with traditional, rural lifestyles

May 8, 2015 by Paul Joseph Watson

Police seized ten children from an “off grid” homeschool family in Kentucky on Wednesday after receiving an anonymous tip about the family’s traditional lifestyle.

The nightmare story began when sheriff’s officers set up a blockade around Joe and Nicole Naugler’s rural property before entering the premises. Eight of the kids were out with their father but Nicole and two of her oldest children were at home. Nicole attempted to drive away but was subsequently stopped and arrested for resisting (attempting to prevent officers from taking her two boys away).

The sheriff then demanded Joe Naugler turn over the other eight children by 10am the next day or face felony charges, an order with which he complied.

“They are an extremely happy family,” said family friend Pace Ellsworth, who asserts that the Nauglers were targeted because of…
